Dear ANA Member:

As nurses, we are keenly aware of the high costs of long-term care and the devastating impact that these costs can have on our financial security, retirement planning, quality of family life, and peace of mind. We may be in good health today, but an unexpected illness, accident, or the natural aging process, can leave us unable to perform daily activities that we take for granted.

As an RN myself, I know the physical demands of our profession. The 2011 ANA Health and Safety Survey with more than 4600 respondents found that 42% of RNs reported being injured on the job at least once in 12 months. In addition, 56% said they had experienced musculoskeletal pain caused by, or made worse by, their job. It is easy to imagine that nurses need for long-term care may be higher than other professions.
